New to the Edge and in fact many other Ford vehicles this year is the Ford Sync 3 infotainment system that is a major improvement over the previous MyFord system. Other upgrades include variable power steering optional in the Titanium trim and standard in the Sport trim package. Lots of room, fuel efficient engine options, and quality throughout are the hallmark of the 2016 Ford Edge.

Performance

The 2016 Ford Edge offers buyers in the Gainesville area a choice of three different engines, all of which come mated to a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission. The base engine on all trim levels with the exception of the Sport model is a 245 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine the produces 275 lb-ft of torque. Front wheel drive is standard on all but the Sport, with all-wheel drive offered as an option. The Sport is only available as an all-wheel drive vehicle.

Those who choose either the SEL or Titanium trim can order the naturally aspirated 280 hp 3.5-liter V6 that develops a full 250 lb-ft of torque. Both this engine and the 2.0L can tow up to 3,500 when equipped properly. The Sport is the only trim package to offer the 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces a very healthy 315 hp and develops a massive 250 lb-ft of pure torque. However, as the Sport is not intended to be used as a tow vehicle, Ford has limited its rated towing capacity to only 2,000 lbs.

Interior

Once you open the door, it's hard not to notice the effort Ford has placed in creating a comfortable and spacious interior using a wealth of quality soft-touch materials practically everywhere you look. The bucket seats up front are not only very comfortable to sit in, but also offer plenty of support for those long weekend getaway trips. Best of all there is plenty of room in the second row for up to three adults to travel in equal comfort.

The new Sync 3 infotainment system uses a full color eight-inch touchscreen that has been conveniently laid out for ease of use with a range of virtual buttons located at the bottom of the screen. While you can still order your 2016 Edge with the basic Ford MyTouch infotainment system, the upgrade to Sync 3 and all of the fantastic features that come with it are a "no brainer" for those who opt for the SEL trim level and above. Bear in mind that the base SE trim level is only available with the Ford MyTouch system so the extra difference in price to step up to the SEL trim is well worth the money.

Safety

Safety has always been at the heart of all Ford vehicles, and the 2016 Ford Edge is no stranger to this theory. Standard safety features found on all trim levels include four-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic traction and stability controls, and enough airbags to keep everyone safe. All models also feature the Ford Curve Control designed to help you maintain better control of your vehicle when you go around corners more quickly than you should.

The Ford Sync system automatically dials 911 in the event of a crash when paired with a compatible smartphone. All Fords now come with the Ford MyKey app that lets you set parameters such as maximum speed and audio volume for your teenage drivers. Among the optional safety equipment are blind-spot monitoring, lane departure/prevention, inflatable outboard rear seatbelts, and a forward collision and mitigation system that automatically applies the brakes when an imminent collision is observed.

* EPA estimated MPG may vary by transmission, trim and individual driving behavior.
